Creative Brief

Title: The Screwtape Letters, book trailer

Project Background: This project is for David Gelb’s Timebased Communication 2 class of 2009. It’s an open project wherein we are given the option of making an Infomotion piece, DVD Menu for Project 1, Book trailer, Film Festival trailer, etc. I will be creating a Book trailer title sequence for C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. The goal for this project is to promote (not retell) the book.

Overview: I envision this project to take shape as an open credit/ title sequence as if this book was to be produced as a movie (so technically it isn’t really a book trailer).

Audience: It would be fun to see a book intended for adults be promoted to little kids! Hah! (or vice versa) (2nd Hah!) But I’m not gonna do that for this project. Intended audience is 24 to 35-year-olds. A bit more mature than I normally target compared to my previous projects. But I figured it’s time to stretch my limits and see what else I can do.

Key Message: There won’t necessarily be a key message, just because I don’t want to give too much away. The goal is to promote the piece and not to retell parts/the whole story, so I plan to just give enough to keep the viewers salivating.

Content Planning: I will be combining footage + moving typography this time.

Bibliography: N/A for now. Unless I should cite the actual book. So, Lewis, C.S. The Screwtape Letters (1942).

Visual/Conceptual References: To be posted as time progresses.

Technologies: After Effects (must deal with rotoscoping, must explore Trapcode plug-in!), Final Cut

Schedule:
The following dates marks the start of each phase.

April 10 – Pre-production – research, re-reading the book, brainstorming, storyboarding, equipment planning, exploring/learning After Effects

May 2 – Production – Shooting, creating and capturing content

May 13 – Post-production – Editing, compositing, titling

May 20 – Packaging and Presentation

Preview

Okay first preview. I was supposed to post this yesterday, but I forgot. The whole thing sorta looks different now. So, I guess this isn’t really a preview anymore.

[edit] This is more of the updated version.

Meh, okay I reworked the other soundscape. I’m not too sure about the old one, and neither for this one. I need crit? The old one I didn’t really have a good rationale for. I just made it wanting to create a piece that sounds inspiring. I played around with the pitch and speed in multiples of 10, but that’s about it. I wasn’t too happy with it just because I find it too serious at times. It’s not really appropriate especially when half my content is a bit humorous. So I decided to redo.

This one, I just made with Garageband’s presets. I’m afraid it might sound too amateur-ish once I start using built-in iLife sounds, etc. as opposed to using my own. But…I guess it’s alright for now. Tolerable, yes/no? I wanted it to be less serious, but also not too charming or dreamy that I’m giving too much away. I want it to be neutral with a hint of humor. I don’t know if that makes sense at all, but I hope it did.

Originally, I was planning to create 10 layers of sounds. But I found it becoming too busy and ugly. So, I decided to set an overall duration time for my movie (1:10) and then have the sound come in after/every 10 seconds, and fade out with 10 seconds interval as well. Coincidentally, the 4th layer which comes in the middle of the whole thing is 10 seconds long. (Hah!)

Okay, I hope this works.

bulging fixed

grrr! it looks like it’s petting it, and not rubbing. haha gotta tweak.

Rub the genie lamp – test

I was trying to upload a 150K video to vimeo and told me to wait 200 minutes before it could process it. I’m starting to wonder whether vimeo plus is a good thing. and I’m starting to not like it.

(And…hah, yeah the hand kinda bulges weirdly at parts. I gotta fix. Sigh long way to go. Wish me luck.)

I am trying to reconsider the overall aesthetic for my version of Project 10. Because it will be about dreams, I have the following goals in mind:

a. very child-like; whimsical
b. optimistic; hopeful
c. elementary
d. content remains as is, so perhaps irony and humor

Marie Digby’ Say It Again

I love the color palette in this video. It’s very cartoon-esque—for me anyway. Very Nickelodeon. Vibrant, complementary colors. “Friendly” forms, or organic.
