Creative Brief
Title: The Screwtape Letters, book trailer
Project Background: This project is for David Gelb’s Timebased Communication 2 class of 2009. It’s an open project wherein we are given the option of making an Infomotion piece, DVD Menu for Project 1, Book trailer, Film Festival trailer, etc. I will be creating a Book trailer title sequence for C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. The goal for this project is to promote (not retell) the book.
Overview: I envision this project to take shape as an open credit/ title sequence as if this book was to be produced as a movie (so technically it isn’t really a book trailer).
Audience: It would be fun to see a book intended for adults be promoted to little kids! Hah! (or vice versa) (2nd Hah!) But I’m not gonna do that for this project. Intended audience is 24 to 35-year-olds. A bit more mature than I normally target compared to my previous projects. But I figured it’s time to stretch my limits and see what else I can do.
Key Message: There won’t necessarily be a key message, just because I don’t want to give too much away. The goal is to promote the piece and not to retell parts/the whole story, so I plan to just give enough to keep the viewers salivating.
Content Planning: I will be combining footage + moving typography this time.
Bibliography: N/A for now. Unless I should cite the actual book. So, Lewis, C.S. The Screwtape Letters (1942).
Visual/Conceptual References: To be posted as time progresses.
Technologies: After Effects (must deal with rotoscoping, must explore Trapcode plug-in!), Final Cut
Schedule:
The following dates marks the start of each phase.
April 10 – Pre-production – research, re-reading the book, brainstorming, storyboarding, equipment planning, exploring/learning After Effects
May 2 – Production – Shooting, creating and capturing content
May 13 – Post-production – Editing, compositing, titling
May 20 – Packaging and Presentation
So long, DMBooks.

Before I forget to blog about this:

This photo was taken last Feb 21st 2009.
The little room downstairs, which housed the design section, was already barricaded when I came. Heard a lot of sad conversations, but it was nice to know that some people do care and are even polite enough to say “Sorry about…” I haven’t really heard of this place till recently and I’m moved! How much more if this has been my go-to bookstore for years. Must be sad. They close officially this Saturday.
*DMBooks or David Mirvish Books is was an art and design bookstore based in Toronto.

Oh and by the way, if you missed out on this year’s Superbowl – well, not the game, but the commercials (lol), here they are:
Um, wow, since WordPress surprisingly doesn’t support embedding Youtube playlists, here’s the Superbowl Commercials 2009 Playlist link.
Shocking: Rogers’ Positive Side
January 10, 2009
Did you know that you get a free Flickr Pro account if you’re an existing Rogers Hi-Speed Internet user?
I obviously didn’t. Why didn’t anybody tell me?? Lol. I was so close to paying their yearly fee! Now I feel great keeping this extra US$24.95 in my pocket.

Dreamer.
January 10, 2009
Today at 4:39 am, I had a very profound realization that I am a dreamer. And that dreamers are categorized as personality type INFP (Introverted, Intuition, Feeling, Perceptive). And if I may quote from personality.info:
“INFPs are introspective, private, creative and highly idealistic individuals that have a constant desire to be on a meaningful path. They are driven by their values and seek peace. Empathetic and compassionate, they want to help others and humanity as a whole. INFPs are imaginitive, artistic and often have a talent for language and writing. They can also be described as easygoing, selfless, guarded, adaptable, patient and loyal.”
Actually, my first clue was my tendency to daydream a lot, contemplate a lot, think a lot about both likely and unlikely events. Perhaps I do these a little too often that I usually result to not accomplishing much by the end of the day. Lol. Second was my habit of asking people highly improbable, sometimes random and unrelated, questions just out of curiosity. In fact, right now I deeply regret not having some sort of technology that allows us to record dreams or subconscious thoughts automatically. Perhaps then I could have enough data of total randomness to compile into a book. A bit narcissistic but aren’t we all? Haha. (Not really, I just really enjoy keeping everything journaled. You know, for future use. Lol. You’d never know.)
I think that one key to being successful in anything we do is to learn as much as we can about our makeup as a human being: understanding what makes us tick, what annoys us, etc. In fact, I think if my parents knew about these different personality types, they wouldn’t be having such a hard time trying to get my sister and I to get along, or to help more around the house.

since when did WordPress change its interface? aww, I’m kinda missing the old one. (yea, not really.) i think everybody’s in a phase where they feel the need to change just because everybody else (e.g. Facebook, Youtube) is doing it. read: trend. I’m not really a fan of trends. and to be honest, every time I hear of one, I am so tempted to rebel against it. conformity is just so boring.
and the sad part is, change doesn’t always mean for the better. I still think that Facebook’s previous interface was way more effective than the one they have now. And as for Youtube, I just have no idea what their point is. seriously.
anyway, I think I owe this blog an update. be back in a bit.
